Official: LA Galaxy announces the departure of Giovani dos Santos
The Mexican midfielder did not reach an agreement with the team led by Guillermo Barros Schelotto so that the MLS will accommodate him in another club
Giovani Dos Santos will no longer be part of Los Angeles Galaxy of the Major League Soccer, closing the never-ending soap that surrounded his future with Guillermo Barros Schelotto's team.
The Mexican international had the chance to stay with the LA team, but to do that he needed to stop being a Designated player (which implied a reduction of at least 25% of his salary). Gio couldn't find an agreement with LA Galaxy, which on Friday announces his departure of the team.
The team from California decided to pay out Giovani dos Santos' contract and leave his future solely in the hands of the MLS to determine if he signs with another team from the league or to sit him down for the rest of his contract (2019).
Gio cost to LA Galaxy a little more than 30 million dollars, and now his future is in the hands of the Major League Soccer, as they now have control over his contract. LA Galaxy bought Giovani before delivering the campaign start list, so that money doesn't count against the club salary cap, to provide their roster with their three franchise players.
The end of his cycle in LA
During his time with Los Angeles Galaxy, Giovani dos Santos played a total of 77 regular-season games, scored 25 goals and gave 14 assists with 6,174 minutes played. As far as Playoffs are concerned, the oldest of the two Santos played four games and collaborated with one goal and one assist.
